LAGARTAGIS
Lagartagis was the first Portuguese butterfly greenhouse. It opened to the public on November 11th 2006, in the National Museum of Natural History and Science.
Now known as Borboletário, it was created from scratch by Tagis, in the Museum’s Botanical Garden. It consists of an infrastructure with a 220 m2 garden and a 40 m2 laboratory.
The greenhouse is a garden with Mediterranean plants and inhabited by several common butterflies, that can be seen in all phases of their life cycle: egg, caterpillar, chrysalis and adult. Its aim was to provide school children with a unique learning space, which functions as a living laboratory. The main objective is to teach butterflies’ biology and their interaction with plants, thus contributing to arouse the children’s interest for nature and biodiversity conservation.
After 2009, the University of Lisbon assumed the management of the greenhouse. For more information visit MUHNAC.
