The creation, in 2004, of a research center specialized in butterfly conservation biology represents an important contribution to the study of biodiversity in Portugal and it constituted a groundbreaking initiative in the Iberian Peninsula.
Its main goals were defined in accordance with the Strategy for National Conservation of Nature and Biodiversity (2001), adapting its fundamental strategic options to this insect group.
Since 2005 the association is an E/NGO – Environmental Non-Governmental Organisation, and in 2010 it acquired the status of Private Entity with Public Utility.
In later years, Tagis has been expanding its activity to other insect orders. Today we are one of the few Portuguese institutions doing entomology studies.
