Euchloe tagis
(Hübner, 1804)
Original illustration of
Euchloe tagis
published by Jacob Hübner on the work “Sammlung europäischer Schmetterlinge” (1796-1805), where this species was first described for science
(pl. 110 pics. 565-566; ©

). The specimens were captured by the German earl Johan Centurius von Hoffmannsegg (between 1797 and 1801) in “Piedade near Lisboa”. This explains the scientific name tagis, meaning “relative to the Tagus” in latin. This species is endemic from the western Mediterranean region, with fragmented populations in Portugal, Spain, France, Italy and North Africa.
Euchloe tagis
is known by the common names of branca-portuguesa (Portuguese), Blanca-portuguesa (Spanish), Portuguese Dappled White (English) and Marblé-portugais (French). It served thus as inspiration for the name of our NGO.
